Often referred to as the "Eighth Wonder of the World", the Ngorongoro Crater is the largest intact, inactive volcanic caldera on Earth. Formed when a massive volcano collapsed on itself some two to three million years ago, its 600-metre deep walls enclose a breathtaking microcosm of East African wildlife. The crater floor, covering 260 square kilometres, creates a natural enclosure for an astonishing variety of animals. It is one of the very few places in Africa where you can reliably spot the highly endangered black rhino in its natural habitat, alongside dense populations of lions, hyenas, elephants, and vast herds of buffalo and wildebeest.
