Ngorongoro Crater Safari Guide: Everything You Need to Know

Landscape from our Tanzania travel collection
FROM THE LUCKY WILD PHOTO NOTEBOOK

What Is the Ngorongoro Crater?

The Ngorongoro Crater is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the natural wonders of Africa. It is the world's largest intact volcanic caldera — a collapsed ancient volcano whose 2,000-metre walls create a natural enclosure sheltering one of the densest concentrations of wildlife on earth.

Wildlife in the Ngorongoro Crater

The Ngorongoro Crater is one of Africa's last strongholds of the critically endangered black rhinoceros — with an estimated 20 to 30 individuals living on the crater floor. This makes it one of the best places in East Africa to see rhino in the wild.

The Flamingo Lake: A Unique Spectacle

Lake Magadi at the crater's floor is a shallow soda lake that fills seasonally with thousands of pink flamingos — one of the most visually stunning sights in all of African wildlife. The contrast of flamingo pink against the golden crater grasslands and deep green crater walls is extraordinary and highly photogenic.

Questions from the notebook

Can you see the Big Five at Ngorongoro Crater?

Yes — all Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, rhino) can be seen in the Ngorongoro Crater. Black rhino sightings are more reliable here than almost anywhere else in Africa.

How long does a Ngorongoro Crater game drive take?

A full crater floor game drive typically takes 4 to 6 hours. Most safari operators include a full day in the crater with a picnic lunch.
